Initial Influences: Joshua Davis

A shout out to one of my favourite artists, and most influential on my most recent work; Joshua Davis. (click image to enlarge) The man is a pioneer in the field of automated drawing processes, using programming to take his work and generate a completely changed outcome from the original. For my last project I used Flash to mutate my artwork in a fashion that was out of my control - to mimic Richard Dawkin's (A Selfish Gene) idea of memes mutating out of our control once put into the media. The use of programming could again prove useful in this project, perhaps as a means of creating the pretense, the alter ego - an image different to the truth that we generate, perhaps layered over the top of the original photograph or as a separate art piece. I feel that my work could benefit from using photography portraiture to refine the process.

Anyway I urge you to take a look at Joshua's site. His work tends to lean towards Illustrator and vectors but coming from a media background I guess the digital bias is acceptable. I'm looking towards trying to introduce more organic techniques into my work over this project, and the early signs are that I'm going to create a series of miniature projects, obvious and more conceptual. After consulting with David Callow I decided it best to indulge the obvious ideas at the beginning of the project - to both get it out of my system and to learn from them, certain aspects can then be taken on and developed.
